What is Supported Living?
Supported Living (called "SL" for short) is a new way of supporting people to live fulfilling and independent lives in their own homes. SL goes beyond mere provision of the basics and continually boosts each person's ability to live an independent, safe and responsible life. How do I get it?
Approval for Supported Living comes from Needs Assessment ("NASC") agencies who manage funds from the Ministry of Health. Your local NASC agency can arrange an assessment to see if you are eligible for SL and then refer you to Renaissance. We will take it from there. What's wrong with residential services and rest homes?
There's nothing wrong with life in a rest home or residential facility if your preferences are the same as everyone else's. Those places just don't have the resources to focus on helping each person in their care to fulfill their potential. Read about how Supported Living is different.Does Renaissance have houses?
No. We believe that owning houses means we would have to spend time and money maintaining them which is better spent working with the people we support. What's worse, we might be tempted to put keeping houses full above the needs of the people we support. What happens if you go out of business in the future?
There have been a lot of stories lately about residential facilities closing and being bought out. It's only natural to worry about the ongoing security of the service that is looking after your needs.Supported Living aims to develop and strengthen the skills needed to thrive, no matter who provides the service or where a person lives. Our service helps people retain their natural resilience which is often eroded when too much is done for them. SL is actually a safer bet, and is the way of the future for Government-funded services. As a leader in this field, Renaissance is confident we will be around for a long time yet.
By comparison, when a residential facility goes out of business, residents often find they have little to fall back upon and don't handle transition to a new service at all well.
