Supported Housing is a fantastic option for people that may require quite a high level of support. The model was developed after extensive consultation and feedback from disabled people and their families. The model focuses on supporting 3 to 4 people who would like to live together in their own home in the community, and are happy to share some resources. A package of supports is developed with each person that are very much individualised, but which may include some sharing of supports such as house work, cooking, shopping etc. This is a great alternative to residential care, as it allows you to live the life you want, with the supports you need.
Supported Housing means;
- Doing things when you feel like it, like eating, sleeping, cooking
- Having your friends or family over to visit
- Not having to share with heaps of people.
- Getting better at things like speaking up for yourself.
- Being in charge of your own money.
- Learning to be as independent as you want to be
How is it different to Residential Care?
One of the great advantages of Supported Housing is that once you are set up, you get a say in who provides the support. If Renaissance are not providing you with a great service, then you have the option of bringing in an alternative provider! Yes that’s right!
If you were in residential care and you were not happy with the support, you would have to move out of your home to get a change of support provider. Here you get to stay in your own home for as long as you are happy and paying your share of the rent of course.
What do I have to do to get it?
Approval comes from Needs Assessment ("NASC") agencies who manage funds from the Ministry of Health. Your local NASC agency can arrange an assessment to see if you are eligible and then refer you to Renaissance. We will take it from there. They will look at funding packages available that may include Individualised funding and Supported Living .
